@JonT It's actually a holdover from our old apartment, where the kitchen was much tighter. With blades up, reaching into the cabinet or on top of the fridge (where we kept usable things instead of just decorations then) was more hazardous. I just got used to them being that way. At the new house there is no cabinet or anything being used in that area.
I tried to edit my post last night for clarity and to sound like less of a psychopath but the forum quit working for me, so here I am looking like a deranged knife nut.
Um. Cooking knives? How, exactly, does someone go about cooking with a knife? I cook with a stove, or a microwave, or a grill, or an oven, but I just cut things with knives, be they of the utility or kitchen variety. Knife is for cutting, remember?
@djslack Ya I was going to buy one till they added those. Wasn't sure how easy it would be to cut them out. Havnt seen one in person for a while to find out.
@JonT I think I need this in my kitchen. Am I the only one who makes it a point to insert the knives with the blade facing up if the knife block has the slots running vertically rather than horizontally? My brain insists they'll stay sharper longer if stored blade up. Of course, my brain insists upon hearing the word "ratio" adding "Horatio who?"
My good ones are in a special built in knife block attached to my butcher's block cart. The ones everyone else can use is on a magnetic strip next to the sink. I used one of those strips back in the restaurant days and loved them.
Magnets ftw!
@metageist - Me too, magnet bar on the wall.
@metageist Magnetic strip here as well! Counter space is a premium. The convection oven wins.
knife block AND magnetic strip on wall for most of them and a few uncommonly used ones in sheaths in a drawer
Bodum Knife "block" until it gets too crowded.

@MrHappypants daaaaaaamn that's nice! Bodum makes great stuff.
HEY MEH, get some of these on the cheap and sell em to us please!
Although I'm also partial to a kapoosh knife block, probably going to break it out for overflow.
Also, this arrangement frightens my girlfriend.
@djslack that arrangement frightens me, why wouldn't you have the handles on the bottom!?
@djslack I agree with your gf - I'd end up stabbing myself while reaching for a knife.
@JonT I think even if the handles were on the bottom, it'd still be terrifying.
@djslack

in the backs of my enemies.

Is this where we post our dead baby jokes?

@djslack I liked the original better that didn't have the clear safety things on the back.
@darkzrobe i didn't even notice those. That's bogus! I retract my endorsement of the stabbed guy knife block if it's child safe.
@djslack Ya I was going to buy one till they added those. Wasn't sure how easy it would be to cut them out. Havnt seen one in person for a while to find out.
In a knife block and in a drawer.
These are pretty cool. You can put the knives however you want. Only complaint is its a little rough to clean.

@darkzrobe That's the kapoosh I like. You can also diy one with bamboo skewers and a box.
@djslack I might just try that when it gets too dirty. Had flower explode once and there are still white specs in there. Damn OCD.

Main use knives on mag strip, less commonly used ones sheathed and in a drawer.
Always thought this one was cool:

@JonT oooh, i love that one.

My two favorite knives are Kyocera ceramic and I use both of them every day, so they just stay on the counter by the sink.
In @mfladd
@jaremelz Damn you!

@mfladd Works for me!
